Alex has over 35 years of experience in the health and human services field, in both the public and nonprofit sector, in New York and Florida.
In New York State, Alex served as Deputy Director of State Grant Programs (1982-89), and later as Assistant Commissioner in the Division of Family and Children's Services (1989-94). She developed requests for proposals and coordinated contract management and on-site program monitoring for over $60 million in federal and state grants; coordinated former Governor Mario Cuomo's historic 1987 Summit on Black and Hispanic Children, which led to declaration of the "Decade of the Child" in New York State; and implemented the Governor's multi-disciplinary initiative to improve outcomes for children in poor urban and rural areas.
After working in the HIV/AIDS field in South Florida, (July 1994-1999), Alex became the founding Executive Director of the Alliance for Human Services in Miami (2000-2004) where she spearheaded the development of the Alliance as a public/private partnership committed to improving the quality of life for residents of Miami-Dade County. Alex's major achievements at the Alliance were development of a multi-faceted community planning process that led to creation of the county's first comprehensive health and social services master plan that identified service priorities for children, youth and families; seniors; children and adults with disabilities; and populations with special needs, including victims of domestic violence, the mentally ill, and homeless populations. At the Alliance, Alex also administered competitive requests for proposals which resulted in the allocation of over $90 million in county funds based on the priorities established in the master plan. In 2002, Alex established the Alliance's Annual Institute which brings over 650 health and human service providers, researchers, policy makers, funders and consumers together for educational workshops and "skills building" workshops to address priorities in the master plan.
Alex moved to Palm Beach County in 2004, where she initially joined the staff of United Way as Director of Community Impact for Seniors and People with Disabilities. During the 2004 Hurricane season, Alex was tapped by a coalition of funders, including Palm Healthcare Foundation, United Way and the Children's Services Council to design and implement the Hurricane Relief and Recovery Fund which has since been nationally recognized as an outstanding model for expediting funding to nonprofits who are meeting emergency needs in the community. These funders subsequently asked Alex to develop and implement the Agency Certification Initiative to help 200 nonprofit agencies in Palm Beach County to meet certification standards for sound nonprofit management. The Agency Certification initiative is now part of The Center for Nonprofit Excellence, based in Boynton Beach, FL.
In July 2007, Alex joined the firm of Strategic Partners Consulting so that she could once again focus her energies on building public/private partnerships to improve outcomes for children and families, seniors, and people living with disabilities. Alex's consulting practice focuses on strategic planning, board development, community planning, facilitating the design and implementation of multi-disciplinary coalitions and partnerships, as well as coaching for nonprofit executives.
